Compass Headings
CH: Column of the "Navigation Log" that provides a convenient way to obtain and list headings displayed by the aircraft's Compass during flight, calculated using the following heading-related information:
- TC: True Course: Intended direction of flight, as measured on a "Chart"
- WCA: Wind Correction Angle: Angular adjustment for wind
- Var.: Magnetic Variation: Difference between True North and Magnetic North
- Dev.: Compass Deviation: Caused by magnetic disturbances from electrical and metal components in the aircraft, as determined during calibration of the aircraft
Obtained from the following sources:
Where:
- True North: Actual location of the North Pole
- Magnetic North: Compass reading of 360 Degrees
Task:
For each Individual Leg: Perform the following steps:
- True Course: Obtain from the "Navigation Log," and enter as follows.
- Wind Correction Angle: Perform the following sub-steps, to calculate:
- Obtain the Wind Direction & Velocity from the "Navigation Log."
- Calculate the Wind Correction Angle, using the following:
- True Course (from Step 1)
- Your E6-B
and enter the result as follows.
- True Heading: Calculate by adding/subtracting the Wind Correction Angle (from Step 2), from the True Course (from Step 1), and enter the result as follows.
- Magnetic Heading: Perform the following sub-steps, to calculate:
- Obtain the Magnetic Variation from your "Chart," and enter it as follows.
- Add/Subtract the Magnetic Variation from the True Heading (from Step 3), and enter the result as follows.
- Compass Heading: Perform the following sub-steps, to calculate:
- Obtain the Compass Deviation from the "Aircraft's Documentation," and enter it as follows.
- Add/Subtract the Compass Deviation from the Magnetic Heading (from Step 4), and enter the result as follows.
